Uncertainty has always been a part of our daily lives. The opportunity during the pandemic was to see uncertainty not as a reason to avoid decision-making but as a chance to choose how we live. In my family, we continue to counter arguments against why something can’t happen with the notion that now is the exact time to ask for exactly what we need and would love to happen. If not now, when could possibly be the time to do so?
In Hiker, Sterling Ruby’s film from 2003, he depicts a female hiker and uses a variety of techniques traditionally associated with horror movies to imply the uncertainty of her chances of ascent, safety, and survival. But if the soundtrack is turned down, not only our comfort in watching but also her confidence in climbing are increased. Whatever lies ahead—a physical, financial, spiritual, or intellectual mountain— now is the time to do whatever you most want. Right now.
