Time

When you have seemingly endless amounts of time, what choices do you make? During the pandemic, many parents recognized how distant their relationships with their kids had become and how they hadn’t fully shown up for the people closest to them. Zadie Smith wrote, “Time is how you spend your love.” My quietest voice tells me I need to choose better, be more available, and lean in. Time is the currency of one’s heart.

Kris Martin adds a golden spike to spaces he feels are significant in his artistic progress. Intended to mark time in space—much like archeological efforts—they allow a delineation, a physical before and after. More than ten years ago, he put one into the floor of the former Aspen Art Museum. It’s nice to know that permanent reminders of moments in time can acknowledge the choices we have made, the value of our time, and the efforts of our love. Here we share an installation image from that exhibition and offer what everyone who didn’t know to look down to seek and basically invisible saw.
