One of art’s roles is to create community and provide a sense of understanding during difficult times and complex moments—things we can’t comprehend or perhaps are not yet ready for. Do you have a community around art? While some of the structures around art can sometimes seem elitist or intentionally intimidating,my commitment is to offer alternatives in the hope of making art more accessible so that it may play a more meaningful role in our lives and our communities.
Rirkrit Tiravanija has created opportunities for people to interact with each other in and around art that range from cooking for visitors to ping-pong tables. If art can be something so far from what we had previously thought, experienced, or imagined, I believe that perceived gap between art and viewers can initially be bridged with curiosity, then possibility.
